HotSpring FreshWater IQ Dosing: What You Need to Know

FreshWater IQ Dosing takes HotSpring’s FreshWater system a step closer to automated water care by monitoring pH and dispensing the required adjustment when prompted. It can also schedule phosphate remover dosing, but it does not remove the need for testing, cartridge refills or a proper start-up. The real benefit is simpler, more consistent day-to-day water care with fewer manual decisions.

HotSpring’s FreshWater Salt System has already taken a fair amount of the repetitive work out of water care. It generates chlorine from salt in the water rather than relying entirely on manual chemical management, and for many owners that makes the weekly routine more predictable.

FreshWater IQ Dosing takes that idea a stage further. It adds three refillable chemical cartridges to the spa and connects them to the FreshWater IQ Smart Monitoring system. When the monitoring system detects that the pH needs correcting, the spa can tell you what is required and, once you confirm it, dispense the appropriate chemical itself.

That sounds very close to automatic water care, but there is an important distinction.

First, it is not completely automatic

Watkins Wellness is quite explicit about this in its own documentation: FreshWater IQ Dosing is not an automatic water care system. For pH adjustment, the spa monitors the water and decides when a correction is needed, but the owner still has to press the Dose button. The system then delivers the appropriate amount of pH Up or pH Down.

Phosphate remover works differently because that can be set to dose automatically on a schedule. Even then, the owner remains responsible for testing phosphate levels and deciding whether scheduled treatment is necessary in the first place.

So the system does not remove the owner from water care altogether. What it removes is some of the measuring, handling and judgement that previously sat between noticing a problem and correcting it.

Where the dosing system fits into FreshWater IQ

It helps to think of FreshWater IQ as three systems doing three different jobs. The FreshWater Salt System generates chlorine to sanitise the water, the FreshWater IQ Smart Monitoring System watches the water chemistry and reports on chlorine, pH and salt, and the FreshWater IQ Dosing System can act on some of those readings by dispensing pH Up, pH Down or phosphate remover.

We have already written separately about what the FreshWater Salt System is and how it works, as well as what the system is actually like to live with day to day. Those articles cover the foundations in more detail, including salt chlorination, normal maintenance, running costs and the sort of weekly routine owners can expect. Rather than go over the same ground again, this article picks up where those pieces leave off and looks at what changes when Smart Monitoring and Dosing are added to the FreshWater system.

The Dosing System will only work if the Salt System and Smart Monitoring System are both installed and operational. Disable either of those and dosing is disabled as well.

What happens when the pH moves out of range?

The Smart Monitoring System continually checks the water. If the pH remains within the acceptable range, there is nothing for the owner to do. If it moves outside that range, the spa presents a Dose option on the control panel, and pressing it tells the dosing system to dispense the appropriate pH correction.

The system then waits before offering another dose, giving the chemical time to mix and the monitoring system time to see what effect the adjustment has actually had. There is some useful checking built into that process too. The system monitors the pH before and after dosing, so if the water moves in the opposite direction from the one expected, it can flag a possible chemical mix-up and ask the owner to check the cartridge.

That is the sort of feature which may never attract much attention until the day it is needed. Putting pH Up into the pH Down cartridge is a very ordinary mistake, but considerably less ordinary once a pump starts dosing it into several hundred litres of water.

What is actually inside the dosing cartridges?

There are three refillable cartridges mounted in a carrier beneath the filter lid: one for pH Up, one for pH Down and one for phosphate remover.

The two pH cartridges contain dry chemical rather than ready-mixed liquid. When a pH dose is required, the pump controller introduces spa water into the appropriate cartridge, where some of the dry chemical dissolves to form a concentrated solution. That solution is then dispensed back into the filter compartment.

The phosphate-remover cartridge is simpler because the product is already liquid, so it is pumped directly from the cartridge into the spa.

This also explains why the cartridges do not all behave in the same way as they are used. With pH Up and pH Down, some solid material can remain in the cartridge when the system asks for a refill. The refill prompt is based partly on the number of doses delivered and partly on whether the expected change in pH is still taking place, so Watkins advises owners to follow the spa prompts rather than waiting until a cartridge looks empty.

What about phosphate remover?

Phosphates sit slightly apart from the rest of the system because FreshWater IQ does not measure them itself. The owner still needs to test phosphate levels separately.

Watkins recommends keeping phosphate below 300 ppb, but specifically warns that zero is not the objective because over-treating can leave excess phosphate remover in the water and interfere with the Smart Monitoring sensor. Scheduled phosphate dosing is therefore off by default.

If testing shows that phosphate levels regularly rise, the owner can switch scheduled dosing on. The normal interval is four weeks, with an option to shorten that to two weeks if ongoing testing shows that four-weekly treatment is not enough. If the phosphate level is already low and stable, there is no reason to switch the feature on simply because it is there.

What FreshWater IQ Dosing does not look after

The combined system is clever, but it is not comprehensive enough to make water testing disappear. FreshWater IQ Dosing deals with pH correction and phosphate remover, rather than automatically balancing every aspect of the water.

Owners still need to pay attention to things such as alkalinity, calcium hardness and phosphate levels themselves, so FreshWater test strips or other suitable testing methods still have a place in the routine. The Salt System remains responsible for chlorine generation too, as the dosing cartridges do not contain chlorine.

FreshWater IQ therefore takes on more of the routine than the Salt System alone, but there is still no single control that allows the owner to forget about water chemistry altogether.

It does not replace a proper start-up either

FreshWater IQ Dosing is intended primarily as a maintenance system once the spa water is already properly established. A fresh fill can require larger chemical corrections than the dosing system is designed to make, so the Salt System needs to be started first, the water balanced and chlorine production established. Smart Monitoring is then brought online and allowed to initialise before dosing is activated.

Watkins’ best-practice material describes a best-case sequence of around three days for the Salt System to become operational, another 24 hours for Smart Monitoring to initialise, followed by the dosing set-up and cartridge priming process.

So this is not a case of filling a new spa, switching FreshWater IQ on and leaving it to sort everything out. The quality of the initial set-up still matters.

Does it actually make day-to-day ownership easier?

In our earlier article on the FreshWater Salt System in everyday use, we described a routine that still involved regular testing and occasional manual pH adjustment. FreshWater IQ Dosing changes that part of the routine most noticeably.

With the Salt System alone, an owner might test the water, notice that the pH is low, find the pH Up, work out how much is needed and add it manually. With FreshWater IQ Dosing, the spa can identify that the pH needs attention, tell the owner which way it needs correcting and, once the owner confirms the dose, add the chemical itself.

None of those individual jobs was especially difficult before. The difference is that several small decisions and actions disappear from the process, and that matters because water care is usually less about mastering one complicated task than keeping on top of lots of small ones. Remembering to test, deciding what needs changing, measuring the right amount and not being tempted to add a little extra because the water looks slightly off all create room for inconsistency.

FreshWater IQ Dosing removes some of that friction without pretending that the owner no longer has a part to play.

Refilling still requires some involvement

The cartridges are refillable rather than disposable, and the spa will tell you when they need attention. The pH cartridges are filled with dry FreshWater pH Up or pH Down, while the phosphate cartridge is topped up with liquid FreshWater Phosphate Remover.

When refilling the pH cartridges, any remaining liquid is carefully poured away while solid chemical can remain in the cartridge before it is topped up. The spa then asks the owner to confirm that the cartridge has been refilled, which resets the dose counter used to determine when the next refill should be requested.

For that reason, it is better to wait for the spa to ask for a refill rather than topping the cartridges up whenever they happen to look low.

Can it be fitted to existing HotSpring spas?

FreshWater IQ Dosing is available on compatible HotSpring Highlife and Limelight models. Some earlier spas can also be retrofitted, although compatibility depends on the spa having the necessary pass-through arrangement and filter-lid hardware.

Watkins provides retrofit components for certain models, so this needs checking against the individual spa rather than assumed from the model name alone.

Installation itself is a dealer job. The system includes a pump controller inside the equipment compartment, tubing to the filter area and the cartridge carrier beneath the filter lid. Compatible spas also need the appropriate firmware installed.

How much of the routine has actually disappeared?

Probably less than the phrase “automatic dosing” might initially suggest. You still need to test some aspects of the water, refill cartridges, look after filters, respond to prompts and pay closer attention during a fresh fill.

Compared with the routine that came before it, though, the change is meaningful. FreshWater Salt already removed the need to manually add most of the chlorine a hot tub requires, and Smart Monitoring added a closer eye on what the water was doing. FreshWater IQ Dosing now takes responsibility for part of the next step: when pH needs attention, the spa can recognise it, tell you about it and make the adjustment once you give the go-ahead.

That still leaves the owner involved, which makes sense. Water chemistry has enough variables that pretending it can all be reduced to a completely hands-off system would be asking rather a lot of the technology.

What FreshWater IQ Dosing does instead is make more of the routine easier to follow and harder to get wrong. For most owners, that is likely to be the part that matters.
